fuckity fuckity fuck fuck fuck

Today's lesson: Before letting the flash drive on which you store in-progress work get too close to your BlackBerry's magnetic clasp, make sure that you have a backup more recent than six fucking weeks ago.

You have been warned.

Fuck.

I've read conflicting things about whether a magnetic field could induce sufficient electrical charge to damage data on a flash drive, but you're probably right in saying that the magnet wasn't to blame. Whether the problem was caused by static electricity, gremlins, or a stray cosmic ray, it's still a reminder about the importance of regular backups.

Unless this was a micro-harddrive and not a true flash drive, the magnet had nothing to do with it. Flash memory is not a magnetic medium.

Thanks: there were a few things for which I had no notes or rough drafts, but most of my work was at least partially salvageable. Microsoft's SyncToy could really have saved my bacon if I'd been using it more regularly.

Live and learn...

Ugh, what a pain! Hope you can recover most of it.
